How It Works

Hydrogen Fuel Cell

The Toyota Mirai generates power by combining hydrogen with oxygen from the outside air. On the road, hydrogen from the fuel tank and air entering from the intake grille meet in the Fuel Cell Stack. There, a chemical reaction involving oxygen in the air, and hydrogen, creates electricity — powering the Mirai. In the end, the only by-product is water and heat. This ensures that there are no harmful emissions.

A fuel cell uses the chemical energy of hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity without harmful emissions. The Toyota Mirai has a large front grille that takes in oxygen from the atmosphere. The hydrogen is stored in the Mirai’s durable and purpose-built tanks before being released into the fuel cell system. In the fuel cell system, hydrogen and oxygen from the air combine in a chemical reaction that creates electricity to power the electric motor. After the chemical reaction creates electricity, the only emission is water vapour, which helps keep the environment clean.

Filling up the Mirai

There’s a pump and a nozzle, much like you would find at a filling station. As you pump in the hydrogen, it travels to carbon-fibre reinforced fuel tanks where it is stored. After a few minutes, you’ll be ready to hit the road while enjoying all the safety, technology, and comfort you expect from a Toyota. In addition, the Mirai features three high-pressure carbon-fibre-enforced-polymer hydrogen tanks for extended range.

Clean & Efficient

The Toyota Mirai is an extremely efficient hydrogen vehicle. Thanks to its borrowed hybrid regenerative technology, electricity can be harnessed and saved when braking. Also, Hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicles don't need a large bank of heavy batteries, making them lighter and more agile. And, unlike battery-powered electric vehicles, refuelling is quick and easy. So, no long waiting periods to get back on the road.

Hydrogen fuel cell safety

The Toyota Mirai chassis is designed around the fuel cell system to protect components in a collision and is equipped with safety sensors to detect potential hydrogen leaks. In addition, if a collision is detected, the hydrogen tank valves are shut off.
 

The Mirai’s hydrogen high-pressure tanks have a three-layer safety structure consisting of:

  • Surface layer – fibreglass-reinforced polymer
  • Middle layer – carbon fibre reinforced plastic
  • Interior layer – plastic liner
