Fuel Cells: A Lifeline for Platinum

Griffith highlighted Hyundai’s target of producing **1 000 ix35 fuel cell vehicles** in the UK by year‑end, signalling a global shift toward hydrogen mobility. If fuel cell vehicles dominate Europe’s EV market, platinum demand could rise to 6.6 million ounces by 2050. If battery EVs dominate instead, demand could fall to **2.5 million ounces**.

Hydrogen infrastructure is expanding rapidly:

  • UK: 65 stations in 2015 → 300 by 2025 → 1 150 by 2030
  • California: 100 stations by 2017
  • Japan: 1 000 stations by 2025

This growth is prompting calls for **cross‑industry collaboration** to accelerate hydrogen adoption.


Why Fuel Cells Outperform Battery EVs

Fuel cell vehicles already offer superior range, refuelling time, and environmental performance. Hyundai’s ix35 fuel cell car delivers:

  • 594 km range
  • 3‑minute refuelling
  • Zero harmful emissions

Toyota has invested **$4.2 billion** to accelerate its hydrogen programme, signalling long‑term commitment.

Global Momentum Toward Hydrogen

Element Energy predicts that with sufficient infrastructure, fuel cell vehicles could take **50% of the new car market by 2050**. At the Mining Indaba, SFA Oxford chairperson Stephen Forrest said Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, and Daimler are all advancing fuel cell programmes, with platinum loadings currently around **14 g per vehicle**.

Japan is leading the hydrogen economy:

  • Fuel cells powering **5.3 million homes**
  • Tokyo Olympics planned to run on hydrogen
  • All government vehicles mandated to be fuel cell powered

South Africa’s Hydrogen Opportunity

Fuel cells are already powering rural communities in South Africa. In the Free State’s Naledi Trust, a **15 kW Ballard fuel cell system** provides lighting, refrigeration, and cooking power — a cost‑effective alternative to extending Eskom transmission lines.

Fuel cells are also being tested for:

  • Underground mining locomotives
  • Ultra‑low profile dozers
  • Stationary power for mines and rural grids

Mitochondria Energy has called for **1 000 MW of fuel cell power by 2020**, which would increase platinum demand by 5%. If just **1% of cars** become fuel cell powered, platinum demand could rise by **20%**.


Beyond Vehicles: Expanding PGM Applications

Platinum‑group metals (PGMs) are finding new uses beyond catalytic converters:

  • Palladium — food preservation, groundwater purification
  • Rhodium — fibreglass, wind turbines, insulation
  • Iridium & Ruthenium — energy storage technologies

Catalytic converter technology has advanced so far that **100 modern vehicles emit the same as one car from the 1960s**.
