Understanding the Energy Flow of Green Hydrogen

How hydrogen stores renewable energy and why it matters for future mobility

Hydrogen is not an energy source — it is a powerful energy storage medium that allows solar and wind energy to be used anytime, anywhere.

One of the most common questions people ask is:

“How much energy does hydrogen actually contain?”

And why use hydrogen if it takes more electricity to produce than you get back?

The answer lies in understanding that hydrogen is not an energy source — it is an energy storage medium. Just like a battery stores electricity, hydrogen stores renewable energy in a stable, transportable form.

Step 1: Electricity Needed to Produce 1kg of Hydrogen

Modern electrolysers typically require:

  • 50–55 kWh of electricity per kg of hydrogen
  • Older systems: 60–65 kWh/kg
  • Future systems: 45–50 kWh/kg

Working Estimate

1 kg Hydrogen = 55 kWh Electricity Input

Step 2: Energy Contained in 1kg of Hydrogen

Hydrogen stores a significant amount of energy:

  • 33.3 kWh (Lower Heating Value – LHV)
  • 39.4 kWh (Higher Heating Value – HHV)

Most calculations use the LHV:

1 kg Hydrogen ≈ 33 kWh of usable stored energy

Step 3: Fuel Cell Electricity Output

Fuel cells convert hydrogen back into electricity at:

  • 50% to 60% efficiency

1 kg Hydrogen → ~18 kWh Electricity

Step 4: Why Use Hydrogen If Energy Is Lost?

Hydrogen is not about efficiency — it is about energy storage.

Solar panels often produce more electricity than can be used or stored in batteries. Instead of wasting this excess energy, it can be converted into hydrogen and stored for:

  • Days
  • Weeks
  • Months
  • Even years

Hydrogen is therefore a long-duration renewable energy storage solution.

The Journey of 1kg of Hydrogen

  • Solar Energy: 55 kWh electricity generated
  • Water: 9 litres purified
  • Electrolysis: Produces 1 kg hydrogen + 8 kg oxygen
  • Storage: Hydrogen stores 33.3 kWh energy
  • End Use: Fuel, electricity, machinery, backup power

The Hidden Value of Oxygen

For every 1 kg of hydrogen produced, approximately 8 kg of oxygen is created.

Potential uses include:

  • Medical facilities
  • Water treatment
  • Aquaculture
  • Agriculture
  • Industrial processes
  • Environmental restoration

A Simple Soulcare Fuel Example

If Soulcare Fuel produces 50 kg hydrogen per day:

  • Electricity required: 2,750 kWh/day
  • Water required: 450 litres/day
  • Hydrogen produced: 50 kg/day
  • Oxygen produced: 400 kg/day
  • Energy stored: 1,665 kWh/day
  • Fuel cell electricity: 900 kWh/day

Vehicle Example

Hydrogen vehicles typically achieve:

1 kg Hydrogen = 100–150 km driving range

Therefore, 50 kg/day can support:

  • Passenger vehicles
  • Shuttle buses
  • Resort transport
  • Utility vehicles
  • Agricultural machinery

Quick Rule of Thumb

ItemEnergy
Produce 1 kg H₂ ~55 kWh electricity
Water required ~9 litres
Oxygen produced ~8 kg
Energy stored ~33 kWh
Fuel cell electricity ~18 kWh
Driving range 100–150 km

The Soulcare Fuel Vision

Soulcare Fuel aims to convert sunlight and water into clean hydrogen energy that can be stored, transported and used whenever needed. By combining renewable electricity, hydrogen production, energy storage and sustainable development, hydrogen becomes a key component of future energy systems supporting homes, tourism, agriculture, transport and community infrastructure.

Solar Generates the Energy. Hydrogen Stores the Energy.

People and communities use the energy when they need it most.
